I decide to talk about hat etiquette because I was curious weather wearing hats in church or indoor is fine and thought it might be interesting for you too. Today, hats are not frequently worn like it was in the past. Still there should be some norms that people probably have to follow. In this blog I will look through must know things about hat wearing rules.

Long time ago hats were worn by almost every man and even some women. Most adults wore hats whenever they left the house. So, the etiquette of taking a hat off was very strong and well known for everybody. In 20th century the usage of hat decreased mostly because John F. Kennedy spread a trend to be hatless.  J. F. Keneddy was the first USA president who didn’t wear a brimmed hat outdoor. He didn’t wear it even on presidential occasions.

Later on most people all around the world tend to be hatless and because of that most people now don’t know proper hat etiquette, especially young generation. Despite this, the fashion comes round and wearing hats are becoming very fashionable these days. That means it’s important to know good manners. Remember that not knowing when to take your hat off can make you appear rude.

The basics of hat etiquette are different for men and women. First of all, let’s talk about when should men take off their hats? A hat worn by man gives him a dignity. In return to that a man should practice a small ceremonial, which is an act recognizing the right, condition or social status of others. Removing your hat is considered as a gesture of respect for particular people or certain occasion in special places. The first and most common rule is to take all hats, including baseball caps and winter caps, at the time you enter indoor place such as private homes, at the table, restaurants, movie theater, classrooms or office.

There’re some exceptions for this rule: a hat does not need to be removed in some public places (airport, lobbies, public transport, athletic events). He also should keep a hat on in places through which he is passing, that will be halls, elevators, standing bars and coffee shops. A hat should definitely be removed in church. Hats in church are not acceptable. As a sign of respect, the hat is briefly removed or raised when passing in front of a church, as well as, passing funeral procession.

The etiquette for women’s hats in church is not so strict. Women can leave their hats in church unless it blocks someone’s view like at the wedding. Women shouldn’t forget to pay attention in theaters, because it also can block someone’s view. Wearing a hat indoors at work can look a bit strange and impolite too. Obviously, it’s proper to wear hats which are a part of working uniform. If you like to wear hats which are traditionally thought as man’s hats, such as baseball cap you should follow all the rules for men.

Although, this whole hat etiquette seems to be difficult to learn, it becomes quite natural and usual when you do it often. Follow these rules and you won’t have to worry about suitability to wear hats in church or any other formal occasion.
